FAQs

Q?

What is Human Trafficking?

A.

Human trafficking is when an individual is taken from their home either by force or given a miss representation of a job offer that promises riches and security for their family back home.

Many women are approached by an agent or family friends, about the possibility of working in a foreign country, offering employment and good wages. The woman is provided with a passport and willingly gets onto a plane, full of excitement about her new life. Once she lands her passport is taken away from her and she is then confined to a room where she is the sexually exploited for money. If she does not comply with this she is often raped and beaten until she does provide a sexual service, servicing up to 30 men a day. She is then told that she will have to pay for her flight, passport, accommodation and food. The trafficker has complete control over the trafficked victim and it hard for the victim to try and escape as they not only fear for their safely but also for that of their family left behind in their home country.

Q?

What impact does human trafficking have on the world?

A.

Human trafficking is a multi-dimensional threat: it deprives people of their human rights and freedoms, it is a global health risk, and it fuels the growth of organized crime.

Q?

What needs to be done?

A.

When dealing with an issue of this importance and urgency, there is much to be done.
• There is a critical need for increased rescues of trafficking victims and prosecutions of traffickers.
• People freed from slavery must be treated as victims of crime, not criminals.
• The demand for modern-day slaves must be stopped. This is not a victimless or harmless crime, and the public should be informed of the risks involved with it.
• With over 27 Million victims of Human Trafficking world wide creating an awareness through Freedom Dolls is a good start help the awareness buy purchasing a Freedom Doll or donating.

Q?

Why did you setup Freedom Dolls Initiative

A.

Freedom Dolls Initiative has been set up to initially help women who have been sexually exploited through human trafficking in Cyprus. Freedom Dolls is hoping to raise enough money to have a shelter in Larnaca and a community centre where the women can meet and sew their dolls. The aim is to provide a safe environment for the women while they go through the recovery process which can be a painful journey. The women will also need much support as they take their traffickers to court. Freedom Dolls is here to offer any kind of support the victims need.

Q?

How can I volunteer?

A.

Everyone who is interested in volunteering with us should contact us giving us   as much information as they can as we will be setting up a safe house in every   city in the world we need people who can help us, please forward us your details   to us and once we have a safe house in your area we will be in contact.

Q?

I am not sure I have any skills, what do you need?

A.

Everyone has something they can contribute to Freedom Dolls we sometimes need someone to sit with the victim at the hospital if they need medical care. Or picking up some bread to take to the house. You may have an unusual talent like origami , calligraphy or brick laying something different and interesting that the victims might like to learn.

Q?

But I can only help one hour a week is it worth it?

A.

Yes, anytime you can spare for the Freedom Doll Victims is time well spent for the victims and for you.

Q?

How can I be sure the money is going to the victims?

A.

Freedom Dolls is a non-profit Organisation that has been set up as there is no long term safe house for the victims who are waiting trial, all the money has to go to the houses and community center to keep it operational. Freedom Dolls is in the process of registering as a charity (in Cyprus this process can take years to complete). The aim is to always put whatever donations we get into building our Freedom Homes around the world.
